Corrective Work Required: Paint Removal from Brick CHAP does not permit painting over unpainted brick surfaces. As part of this ATP, the applicant is required to: Remove yellow paint from all historic unpainted brick surfaces. Paint removal must follow the Baltimore City Historic Preservation Design Guidelines – Exterior Building Materials: Masonry, Only the gentlest means possible should be used. Acceptable methods include low-pressure water washing, non-ionic detergents, or commercially available paint removers tested in small areas first. Abrasive methods such as sandblasting or high-pressure washing (above 300 psi) are strictly prohibited. The goal is to restore the brick to its natural, unpainted condition without damaging the surface or mortar joints. Conditions of Approval: All painted wood or metal storefront elements (excluding brick) may remain as painted. No additional painted areas may be added without prior CHAP approval. A paint removal plan or method must be submitted for review before work begins. Any damage to the brick during removal must be repaired using historically appropriate methods and materials.
